20 Reasons why Localization is Important to Website Conversion

Thanks to the global reach of the internet, website localization is one of the best things you can do to increase website conversions. By creating a culture- and language-specific version of your website for each demographic market you target, you become a truly international business. All businesses, even small online retailers, can benefit from localization. In fact, you can’t afford not to have localized websites, and here are 20 reasons why.

1. It offers global expansion and increased reach.

Although English is still the predominant language online, other languages, most notably Chinese, Spanish, French, and Arabic, are quickly closing the distance. Offering web content in additional languages and cultures helps you increase your reach and become a respected international business.

2. Localization helps you appeal to multicultural audiences.

Translation helps international visitors find and buy from you, but it doesn’t consider cultural differences and sometimes doesn’t convey your message or brand very well. Localization includes both cultural and linguistic concerns, helping you reach audiences in different cultures much better.

3. It increases web traffic.

Search engines rank websites with localized versions or pages higher than non-localized websites and return your website as a result more often. On top of that, local sites are more likely to link to you when you provide information in the local language. Increasing traffic is one of the three most important things you can do to boost revenue, and more traffic means more sales.

4. You get more traffic from regional and language-specific search engines.

These smaller search engines have much less competition because they’re small and most businesses don’t have localized websites to appear in results. This means it’s much easier for your localized websites to rank higher than your English website. The higher you rank and the more often your website appears in search results, the more traffic and sales you get.

5. Localization increases brand recognition.

When you translate your website into the language and culture of your target market, you show that you respect and value your audience. They in turn are more aware of your business than your English-only competitors because they see your website more often and more easily understand your message.

6. Localization increases website stickiness and sales.

Having a strong localization plan boosts your presence and sales in a targeted area, such as localizing in French and German to increase sales in Europe. Multiple studies have found that when users are presented with a website in their native language, they stay on the site twice as long and are four times more likely to make a purchase from it.

7. It increases overall ROI.

Increased traffic, conversions, and brand awareness also leads to increased trust, credibility, customer loyalty, and satisfaction, in turn leading to more conversions. Localization is also scalable for both your audience and your budget, delivering huge benefits for only a marginal additional cost.

8. Localization maintains low printing and content distribution costs.

Localizing your website increases reach without raising these costs a few ways. First, you can reuse much of the same content across multiple languages; second, translating your website into a new language and culture is scalable; finally, having a web presence costs the same no matter what language or culture. Having a localized website may also eliminate the need for direct mail such as catalogs and brochures in various languages.

9. It is a cost-effective virtual branch office or satellite location.

Instead of building a brick-and-mortar store or renting an office in an international location, your localized websites become those virtual stores by offering information, products, contacts, and everything else you can deliver digitally.

10. Localization lowers customer support costs.

By answering questions and providing information in a target market’s native language and culture, you give customers what they need online in the best format for them, which reduces the need for multilingual phone and chat support.

11. It allows you to target minorities in your own area.

Many countries have large subgroups with their own languages, cultures, and skyrocketing purchasing power, such as the Latino market in the USA. Creating localized websites for these groups helps you solidify your presence and boost sales in your own area.

12. Localization maintains brand image and voice across cultures.

The problem with straight translation is that it doesn’t consider cultural differences and doesn’t always maintain your branding message. Localization is better than translation because it considers communication, sales incentive, design, layout, and programming specific to each culture and area, so you don’t lose the integrity of your brand across languages.

13. You become a local business.

Localizing your website turns you into a local business, which boosts conversions because many people want to buy locally, you get more traffic from local keywords, and you have an easier time building brand awareness.

14. Localization makes your local marketing stronger.

When you have a website specific to a certain area’s language and culture, your local internet marketing efforts (including search engine optimization, directory listings, and social media) benefit from having a local resource to point visitors to.

15. It makes you more trustworthy and credible.

By using the area’s local slang, idioms, metaphors, and figures of speech, you can communicate with your target customers more easily and directly, reducing confusion and boosting your own reputation.

16. Localization appeals to more customers.

Most web users don’t buy products online in a language other than their own. By offering them that option, you attract more prospects and close more sales.

17. It means fewer abandoned carts.

Programming can be as much a barrier as language or culture. Localization includes proper programming to prevent backend problems such as forms that make it difficult to input personal and payment info. Fewer problems means more closed sales and higher average order value.

18. Localization makes payment easier.

When you enable local credit cards, shipping and tax codes, and buying practices, your localized websites attract customers that would shop elsewhere otherwise, boosting your ROI, conversions, and revenue.

19. It increases local sales.

Offering products, support, FAQs, and other information in your customers’ native languages makes them more likely to buy from you because they have all the information they need in a format they understand to make an informed purchase.

20. Localization increases revenue.

Most consumers care more about language than price. So even if they know they can find a product cheaper somewhere else, they are more likely to buy from you at full price if you have a localized website for them.

How to make the internet a better place with SEO? by Matt cutts

Does Google Consider SEO to be spam?
A 3 years old video by Mat Cutts that answers a question people still ask.

And the answer is yet the same and will still be the same:

SEO, Stands for Search Engine Optimization, is about trying to make sure that your pages are well represented to search engines.

How?
  • By making sure the site crawlable (Robots, sitemaps, etc.)
  • Finding the Right keywords (KW and competitors research)
  • Usability and design (titles, headers, landing pages, content, multimedia)
  • Speed
  • Responsiveness (is it mobile and tablet friendly or not)
  • Update rate (How frequent the site adds new content, and how valuable and informative it is)?

The Future of SEO is Taking your Visitors to Your Company's Kitchen

Many of you must have heard of Google's new R&D projects to emulate human interactions on website to base their ranking algorithm on the user experience and whether the visited site offered a perceived value or not.

That is why the future of SEO will not be keywords or backlinks but "Users"
Therefore, site owners need to offer a true user experience to their visitors by being more transparent with them. i.e. involving them in the kitchen :

So, Forget about the famous quote, attributed to Otto von Bismarck:
Laws are like sausages, it is better not to see them being made.

How To Be More Transparent?

  1. Add a company page.
  2. Add images to your company page (let your visitors see you.)
  3. Add team video. Let your visitors see and hear you and your team
  4. Photos or video of your office. Let your visitors see where you work and what you offices look like.
  5. Don’t hide your phone number. This is a huge red flag.
  6. Integrate your social media accounts
  7. Show customer reviews and testimonials
  8. Embed a Google map of your office
  9. Show a photo and name of your sales person on the sales or contact page
  10. Don’t use stock photos of people in offices. Instead take real photos of your people in your offices.
  11. If you sell services, then describe your process
  12. If you sell products, then show how they get made

(I know a Toronto based SEO company called Powered By Search that has an animated photo of their office on the Main header on the Home Page showing visitors their employees while working.)

Here are some extra guidelines from the Stanford Web Credibility Project:

How to find a Broken Backlink? The 404 Analysis Method

You may ask a client, supplier, blogger or whatever to add a link to one of your pages to get some link juice or referrals, but they may do a typo and add a wrong link URL to your site that when clicked it ends visitors up on a 404 not found page. So, how can you know those bad links?!

Here are some ideas to track those links and report them:

1- In the header template of your 404 page, find this line in your Google Analytics Tracking Code: _gaq.push(['_trackPageview']); Then change it as follows: _gaq.push(['_trackPageview','/404error/?url=' + document.location.pathname + document.location.search + '&ref=' + document.referrer]); What's happening here is we're creating a virtual pageview that starts with /404error/ (you can name it anything you want) and then appending 2 made-up parameters to help us spot the source of the problem:
  • · "url=" will catch the URL which a visitor attempted to access.
  • · "ref=" will catch the referring page.
Here's what it will look like in your reports (when you do a search for "404error")

2- Another way is use Raven's GA Config tool. Simply add your GA account number then copy the Google Analytics tracking script just before the </head> tag on your 404 page (not your entire website).
The code will be like this:

Asynchronous

<script type="text/javascript">
  var _gaq = _gaq || [];
 _gaq.push(['_setAccount', 'UA-XXXXX-X']);
  _gaq.push(['_trackPageview', '/404.html?page=' + document.location.pathname + document.location.search + '&from=' + document.referrer]);

  (function() {
    var ga = document.createElement('script'); ga.type = 'text/javascript'; ga.async = true;
    ga.src = ('https:' == document.location.protocol ? 'https://ssl' : 'http://www') + '.google-analytics.com/ga.js';
    var s = document.getElementsByTagName('script')[0]; s.parentNode.insertBefore(ga, s);
  })();
</script>

Traditional ga.js

<script type="text/javascript">
var gaJsHost = (("https:" == document.location.protocol) ? " https://ssl." : "http://www.");
document.write(unescape("%3Cscript src='" + gaJsHost + " google-analytics.com/ga.js' type='text/javascript'%3E%3C/script%3E"));
</script>
<script type="text/javascript">
try{
var pageTracker = _gat._getTracker("UA-XXXXX-X");
pageTracker._trackPageview("/404.html?page=" + document.location.pathname + document.location.search + "&from=" + document.referrer);
} catch(err) {}
</script>

Understanding Google In-Depth Articles' Market Share

In-depth articles are typically long-form content from major publications, but, unlike news results, they may be months or years old. Google seems to be targeting “evergreen” resources, focusing on proven articles from trusted publications.

While some marketers have received excellent traffic bumps from in-depth articles, they’ve had to compete against some major websites. It appears that in-depth articles are actually slanted to favor larger, more established sites, at least according to a Forbes article by Dr. Peter J. Meyers and Denis Pinsky written earlier this year. They found 10 websites accounted for nearly 65 percent of the results for in-depth articles.

Here are the top 10 sites dominating the in-depth results.

  1. nytimes.com — 25.3 percent
  2. wsj.com — 8.0 percent
  3. newyorker.com — 5.7 percent
  4. theatlantic.com — 5.6 percent
  5. wired.com — 4.2 percent
  6. slate.com — 3.9 percent
  7. businessweek.com — 3.7 percent
  8. thedailybeast.com — 3.3 percent
  9. forbes.com — 2.8 percent
  10. nymag.com — 2.7 percent

Top 25 Phrases with In-depth
  1. jobs
  2. ancestry
  3. wedding dresses
  4. shoes
  5. toms
  6. 50 shades of grey
  7. laptop
  8. halloween costumes
  9. diabetes
  10. smartphone
  11. bruce springsteen
  12. pregnancy
  13. led
  14. tablet pc
  15. depression
  16. tory burch
  17. global warming
  18. laptops
  19. cruises
  20. car sales
  21. travel
  22. mba
  23. apartments
  24. router
  25. stock market

Not all Categories are Equal

Meyers and Pinsky also discovered that in-depth articles don’t appear as frequently for some topics as they do for others. Here’s a list of topics, and what percent of searches within those topics triggered an in-depth article box:

  1. Family & Community — 14.4 percent
  2. Health — 12.8 percent
  3. Law & Government — 12.0 percent
  4. Arts & Entertainment — 7.2 percent
  5. Finance — 7.0 percent
  6. Jobs & Education — 5.8 percent
  7. Hobbies & Leisure — 5.6 percent
  8. Computers & Consumer Electronics — 4.8 percent
  9. Internet & Telecom — 4.4 percent
  10. Food & Groceries — 3.6 percent
  11. Home & Garden — 3.2 percent
  12. Sports & Fitness — 3.2 percent
  13. Travel & Tourism — 3.2 percent
  14. Dining & Nightlife — 3.0 percent
  15. Real Estate — 3.0 percent
  16. Apparel — 2.8 percent
  17. Beauty & Personal Care — 1.6 percent
  18. Retailers & General Merchandise — 1.4 percent
  19. Vehicles — 1.2 percent
  20. Occasions & Gifts — 0.8 percent

If you want more traffic and you’re in a category that’s low on this list, in-depth articles might give your search traffic a major boost.

SEO Tips for Online Business in the U.S.

USA retailers SEO tipsThe USA online market is now growing more than anytime before. Consumers are becoming more and more confident shopping online, and the result is that the country’s internet retailing sector is now a multi-billion dollar industry and competition is also getting stronger.

Here are a few tips that should leverage your Online Business SEO:

1- Your TLD should be ".us" not ".com"

Although it is an online business on the World Wide Web, it is still Local and you want to rank higher for your country for real ROI.

Most merchants often forget that their SEO efforts will be measured by "organic rankings" on Google.us (and not .com). It would also be a good practice to bu the ".com" and redirect any traffic coming to it to the official ".us"

2- Set Geo Targeting in Google WebMaster Tools

Google’s Webmaster Tools is important for a number of SEO reasons, but it can be especially useful for US companies, as it allows you to tell Google the location of your website. This is important if you are using a .com.

3- Use your Local Keywords:

If your business is targeted one state you have to mention its name in many places in your pages. If you are a country-wide business try to create pages for each state and target it as an entity. Use the Title Tags, headings, rich snippets, etc.

4- Take Advantage of Physical Addresses

It’s important to add any relevant physical address to footers or a Contact Us page, particularly for merchants with a local or regional focus. Also, do not forget to add your business to Google Places for business

5- Develop States-focused Link Building Strategy

Do some research to find potentially relevant American websites and social media influences  See what they’re doing and interact as much as you can. In the meantime, get busy sharing, replying/retweeting, and posting relevant content.

6- Submit to Web Directories and Local Directories

One of the most effective ways to generate quality backlinks is to submit to major directories, including general web and business directories (DMOZ, Yahoo Directory, etc.), RSS feed directories, and those unique to your niche. Also, identify your Local directories and submit your business to them and get listed.
The more you submit, the more you will increase visibility to search engines and potential visitors. But of course take care not to submit your site to low quality directories or it will have negative results on your rankings and might get you penalized.

Why Don't you Ping Them too?

First, Do you know what Pinging a webpage is?

Have you Ever Asked Yourself these Questions before?

  1. Why are blogs more powerful than ordinary websites?
  2. Why do search engine easily index blogs while other websites struggle to get indexed?
  3. Why do blogs attract more traffic than ordinary websites?

The answer is the blog’s ability to PING. Its not just a geeky term. Its a lot more powerful tool and process than you have imagined.

Whenever a blog pings, many background processes happen which get your blog quickly indexed by search engines as well as bringing traffic from many other sources.

There are many blog directories and ping services which accept pings. When you add a new post in your blog, it sends a ping to all these websites saying, “Hey, I’ve just added a new post in my blog”.

And that’s when magical things happen:

  • Some of those websites add your blog in their directory giving you a one way link.
  • Some of those websites list your blog in their recently updated blog list.
  • Search engines quickly come to your blog, index it and start sending traffic.
  • Blog search engines like Google Blog Search, Yahoo Search Blog, etc… also crawl and index your blog which in turn send additional traffic.
  • People visiting those blog directories see your blog there and come to your blog.
  • Blogrolling scripts like blogrolling.com and WordPress check update services to see if you’ve updated and then they reflect that on everyone’s site, usually by moving you to the top of people’s blogrolling list or putting a recently updated indicator by your link.
  • Services like Technorati (http://technorati.com) spider your links to tell who is linking to you and who you’re linking to, almost in real time. If you show up on someone’s Technorati link list for their site (often called an “egorati search”) they’re likely to visit your site to see what you said, increasing your exposure.
  • Other sites like weblogs.com and blo.gs list the most recently updated blogs and many people browse these to find something new when they’re bored.
  • Isn’t this pinging service a dream come true for the webmasters?

So, Let's Do Some Ping!!!

Ping-O-Matic is a service to update different search engines that your blog has updated. So, that you are proving to the digital world that you are the first who posted such content.

PingoMatic regularly check downstream services to make sure that they're legit and still work. So while it may appear like they have fewer services, they're the most important ones.

How To Ping Comments and Mass Ping?

You can Ping comments the same way you ping posts. by enabling them to have their own URLS and adding them to the above lists. And if you have a lot of comments that you want to Ping them all at once, you can also do that in Bulk vua PingFarm. First, you need to create a list of all the URLs, then upload them to this tool.

A Ping Warning for WordPress Bloggers!

You have seen numerous advantages of using ping but this same ping can work against you if you don’t use it properly. If you are using WordPress the way it is provided then it’s very possible that by now your blog has been banned from many ping services because of ping spamming.
If you are using WordPress the way it is provided then it’s very possible that by now your blog has been banned from many ping services because of ping spamming.
Also, scheduling future posts in that way will actually irritate ping services and your blog will quickly get banned from the ping services.

So, What is the Solution for such a dilemma?

The Solution: MaxBlogPress Ping Optimizer Plugin. MaxBlogPress Ping Optimizer plugin corrects WordPress’s pinging system and solves all the problems listed above for even the latest version of WordPress.

How It Works?

  1. When you create a new post, your blog will ping and notify all the ping services that it has been updated. This encourages search engines and different blog directories/services to index your updated blog properly.
  2. When you edit an existing post, it won’t send an unnecessary ping to ping services and saves your blog from getting banned.
  3. When you post a future post by editing the time stamp, it will ping only when your post appears in future. It won’t unnecessarily ping many times when you schedule posts as WordPress does by default.

What if you do not want to be Hotlinked to Save your bandwidth?

You can stop others from hotlinking your site's files by placing a file called .htaccess in your Apache site root (main) directory. The period before the name means the file is hidden, so you may want to edit your file as htaccess.txt, upload it to your server, then rename the txt file to .htaccess in your directory. Contact your web host on how to access your directories and configure your .htaccess file.

Example: Your site url is www.mysite.com. To stop hotlinking of your images from other sites and display a replacement image called qX4w7.gif from an image host, place this code in your .htaccess file:

RewriteEngine On
RewriteCond %{HTTP_REFERER} !^http://(.+\.)?mysite\.com/ [NC]
RewriteCond %{HTTP_REFERER} !^$
RewriteRule .*\.(jpe?g|gif|bmp|png)$ http://i.imgur.com/qX4w7.gif [L]

The first line of the above code begins the rewrite. The second line blocks any sites other than your own mysite.com url. The [NC] code means "No Case", meaning match the url regardless of being in upper or lower case letters. The third line means allow empty referrals. The last line matches any files ending with the extension jpeg, jpg, gif, bmp, or png. This is then replaced by the qX4w7.gif image from the imgur.com server. You could easily use your own hotlink image by placing an image file in your site's directory and pointing to that file instead.

To stop hotlinking from specific outside domains only, such as myspace.com, blogspot.com and livejournal.com, but allow any other web site to hotlink images:

RewriteEngine On
RewriteCond %{HTTP_REFERER} ^http://(.+\.)?myspace\.com/ [NC,OR]
RewriteCond %{HTTP_REFERER} ^http://(.+\.)?blogspot\.com/ [NC,OR]
RewriteCond %{HTTP_REFERER} ^http://(.+\.)?livejournal\.com/ [NC]
RewriteRule .*\.(jpe?g|gif|bmp|png)$ http://i.imgur.com/qX4w7.gif [L]

You can add as many different domains as needed. Each RewriteCond line should end with the [NC,OR] code. NC means to ignore upper and lower case. OR means "Or Next", as in, match this domain or the next line that follows. The last domain listed omits the OR code since you want to stop matching domains after the last RewriteCond line.

You can display a 403 Forbidden error code instead of an image. Replace the last line of the previous examples with this line:

RewriteRule .*\.(jpe?g|gif|bmp|png)$ - [F]

Warning: Do not use .htaccess to redirect image hotlinks to another HTML page or server that isn't your own (such as this html page). Hotlinked images can only be replaced by other images, not with an HTML page.

As with any htaccess rewrites, you may block some legitimate traffic (such as users behind proxies or firewalls) using these techniques.

HOW DO I TEST IMAGE HOTLINKING?

Use AltLab URL hotlink checker to check the hotlink protection on your web site. Simply enter the complete URL (ex:http://mysite.com/image.jpg) to see if your image can be loaded and hotlinked by a remote server.
